When it comes to building hypercars that are instantly recognizable from their stable mates yet share the same emotional appeal, Lamborghini takes the tiramisu. The highly-successful Gallardo’s successor, the Huracán coupe, is proving itself to be a worthy heir. Launched last November 2015, our cover hypercar, the Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2, is a Lambo purist’s delight: a two-wheel drive version of the almighty Huracán coupe. Specifically designed and engineered for its rear-wheel drive set-up, the Huracán LP 580-2 combines new looks with a
drivetrain that captures the pure Lamborghini spirit.
The Huracán LP 580-2 is painstakingly engineered and precision-tuned for an incomparable driving experience. A naturally aspirated, 5.2 liter V10 engine shared with the Audi R8 V10 dispatches 580 restless horses to the rear axle. Combined with the Huracán LP 580-2’s
1,389 kg dry weight (33 kg less than the all-wheel-drive version), performance is superlative. To aid traction, the Huracán’s weight is distributed 40% front/ 60% rear, decreasing inertia on the front axle. In the process of adapting rear-wheel drive, an entirely new power management setup was utilized, which included suspension modifications, a new steering
setup, and recalibrated stability and traction controls to connect the driver as directly as possible with the road. Any of three driving modes – Strada, Sport and Corsa (Road, Sport and Race, respectively) can be selected to induce or attenuate the Huracán’s oversteering characteristics to unbox its pure, rear-wheel drive behavior.
Stephan Winkelmann, Automobili Lamborghini’s dapper President and CEO says, “The Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 continues the Lamborghini tradition of pure, visionary and technology-driven models. The rear-wheel drive model fits perfectly into our Huracán family, appealing to those wanting an even more intense driving experience, or who currently drive other rear-wheel drive marques and aspire to drive a Lamborghini.
This is the purest expression of a Lamborghini to date, with class-leading technological refinements. It is a serious car for serious drivers: it is maximum driving fun.”
The unadulterated rear-wheel drive
Huracán LP 580-2 completes the existing Huracán family, along with the all-wheeldrive Huracán LP 610-4 and the roofless Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder.
