Officially, there is no certified lap time keeper of the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. That, though, hasn't stopped car manufacturers--and the motoring media--in setting its own lap times around the fame circuit, often with the goal of setting the fastest lap time of a production car. On top of the "mythical" time board currently is Radical SR8 LM which--though road-legal, is really more of a race car than a road car--has a lap time of six minutes and 48 seconds that was set on August 19, 2009.
Well, just over seven years later and Lamborghini has set the fastest lap time on the track with a real roadcar: six minutes and 52.01 seconds with the Lamborghini Huracan Performante with company test driver Marco Mapelli behind the wheel.
The record-breaking run was set on October 5, 2016 yet Lamborghini only made this feat recently known to the pubic. One of the witnesses to the feat was Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali.
“This was an incredible and emotional moment,” Domenicali said after the run. “Together with Maurizio Reggiani, we agreed during the car’s development that with the technical and performance prowess of the Huracán Performante, not only was a sub seven-minute lap at the Nordschleife possible, but the lap record too. We wanted to achieve the Nurburgring victory in advance of the Performante’s launch, which was a challenge in terms of weather and availability of the Nordschleife. Not only did we take the lap record, we took it by some seconds!"
The Lamborghini Huracan Performante will be launched at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show on March 7. For the meantime, you can check out the car's record-setting run in the video below as well as some photos of the car and of Mapelli.
