It's long overdue but it'll finally be implemented: jeepney stops will soon be put up along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City and España Boulevard in Manila as agreed upon by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the leaders of several jeepney transport groups.
According to the agency, the plan is part of the ongoing efforts of the Inter-Agency Council on Traffic to improve the traffic condition in the metropolis since the Commonwealth-España corridor has one of the heaviest concentrations of jeepneys in Metro Manila.
“We need to end the days of picking up / dropping off passengers anywhere,” said MMDA General Manager Thomas Orbos said who also noted that jeepney drivers pick up and drop off their passengers in any place along the route, which results in traffic snarls in the surrounding areas.
The leaders of the jeepney transport groups--namely Zeny Maranan of Fejodap, Obet Martin of Pasang Masda, Orlando Marquez of LTOP, and Boy Vargas of Altodap--pointed out that their willingness to having these jeepney stops is proof of their confirmation to modernization and of being attuned to the needs of the commuters.
To study the traffic and passenger flow in order to identify the location of the jeepney stops, at technical working group will be formed comprised of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the respective local government units.
Besides the jeepney stop project, the agency will continue to coordinate and work with the LTFRB, local traffic enforcement groups of Manila and Quezon City for the continuous intensified clearing operations in their respective areas to ensure an unimpeded flow of traffic and that the route is free of any obstruction.
